Why do bad things happen?

Hello Readers!

Many of you were inspired by the November/December issue of The Call and are giving gifts of missions this year. Wouldn't it be cool if the needs to several projects were met because you honored somebody on your Christmas list. It gives me the chills just thinking about it. Together we can do it!

I am writing today because the January/February issue will be mailing this week. Hooray! This issue is challenging and inspiring. This issue asks the question, "Why do bad things happen?". Why are children dying of hunger in Africa, why was Haiti devastated with hurricane damage this year, and why don't children have coats in Kazakhstan - I don't know, but I do know that God is bigger than all of those things. The writers share their stories of life struggle and defeat, but through each circumstance God is in control.

You will soon be bombarded with ways to set goals for the coming year, ways to simplify your life, and ways to lessen your environmental footprint but take a moment to laugh, cry, and be reminded that God is in control, even in the bad times.

Wherever you are on the road of life be blessed!

Return Policy Guaranteed

The November/December issue is on its way to your home. During the Concert of Prayer we dedicated our self to the ministry of prayer. And in this issue we look at the ministry of giving for the Christmas season. You will find great gift-giving ideas for all the people on your Christmas list. The theme "Return Policy Guaranteed" means that we guarantee giving the gift of missions is not something someone will want to take back. And for every investment in missions there are eternal awards guaranteed.
Think you might give the gift of missions this year? Take a moment to tell me about it by clicking on the comments link below.

10/14 - The Middle East

The Final Curtain Falls

The Concert of Prayer has come to an end. If you joined the concert today you know we prayed for the lost in the Middle East. God is using His people in unique ways to enter these closed countries and through friendship evangelism there are open discussions about Jesus. Please continue to lift those serving in this area before the throne as they may be the only Jesus those living in these areas ever see.

Thank you for making the Concert of Prayer a success. Many prayers were offered on behalf of this concert and I am proud to have been a part of it. Please feel free to keep your magazine and use it as a prayer guide in your personal quiet time. We averaged 30 -40 callers on any given day and we know many of those callers had multiple listeners. God's people were praying and I believe God is going to bless our prayers.

Do you think the Concert of Prayer needs an encore? Would you like to see it come back next year or was it great this time, but not something you would want to do every fall? Take a moment to click on the comments link below and give me your two-cents. I will take your feedback to the Call to Prayer team.

Thanks for waiting in the long lines, redeeming your tickets, and committing to attend the concert. You have been a blessing an in turn I hope you have been blessed.

10/13 - Paraguay

Inspiration and New Believers

Did you catch the concert today? Larry Carr led us in prayer for the field of Paraguay. There are many new believers in Paraguay. That's great! God is at work! Larry reminds us to be faithful in praying for these young believers as they learn to commit their lives to the Lord and to His will.

Also, Larry prayed for he and Sharon as they will be sharing at missions conference soon. I know this is a prayer request many of our missionaries would have. It's hard to present missions in new and exciting ways. There is a hard balance of getting the right amount of information to those who need to hear and yet coming at it from a different angle. Won't you continue to pray for our pastors, teachers, and missionaries that the God that formed the universe would continue to breathe inspiration into their hearts for us all to share?

Be inspired!

10/12 - Democratic Republic of Congo

A New Land

What's it like to visit a new area of the world that you have never experienced before? A land that you know has been ravished with civil war and violence. Sound a little scary or adventurous? Likely, a little but of both.

A team of World Gospel Mission missionaries have been traveling into the Congo from Arua, Uganda. They have made contact with the national church and found that the remaining pastors living in Congo are desperate for help. This land and its people are looking for hope. A kind of hope that can only be found in our Lord. As WGM determines if this could be the next area of outreach won't you pray for those who know that Jesus is Lord as they shine their lights in a land that desperately needs to know Him? And pray for those pastors and WGM staff as they research ways WGM might be able to help reach others with the Good News of Salvation?

We only have two days left of the Concert. Won't you join us tomorrow as we pray for the field of Paraguay? See you at the Concert!

10/11 - Haitian American Ministries

Family Prayer

My family joined all of you attending the concert in prayer today. You see the house my in-laws lived in was struck by lightning back in February. The lightning caused a house fire that has had them displaced until this week. So amongst unpacking boxes, we paused with you to lift Haitian American Ministries to the throne.
The unpacking got me to thinking about this ministry. Families moved to Florida from Haiti to start a new life in this new place. Packing up their homes and families not really knowing what they were in for, moved hoping for a better result. Unpacking their boxes and wading through the chaos must have been overwhelming. But Sue Martin and others through the church have been there to show them love, encouragement, and that there is hope through Jesus. Sue needs more ministry partners. Would you pack up your house and family and move to Florida from wherever you are located? Where is your mission field?

10/10 - St. Croix

Greater than the Economy

If you were able to join us for the Concert of Prayer today Ned Prince left us with many prayer requests that we can continue to lift up before the throne for the field of St. Croix.

Ned said something in his prayer that struck me. He prayed for those who are concerned about the economy and gave praise for a God that is not affected by the economy. Oh the things that we worry about, the concerns we carry - they are no secret to our God. He remains bigger and greater than all of our worries. We should be faithful to cast all our cares upon Him who is greater.

Join us for the concert tomorrow!

10/9 - India

Prayer on the Go!

I caught the Concert of Prayer on the run today. I was scheduled to be at a luncheon on the Indiana Wesleyan University campus to promote World Gospel Mission's internship program. So I prayed with you all on the go.
Did you know that Kevin Zirkle joined us at midnight his time for that call? Prayer is a discipline. Those of you who take that ministry seriously know that. Now, I am not saying that we should all be up at midnight praying, but I have learned through the Concert of Prayer that structuring your life around a dedicated prayer time is not a bad discipline to have.

Thanks for joining us to pray for India.
See you tomorrow!

10/8 - Mexico

The Dominance of the Catholic Church

Today's Concert of Prayer got me to thinking about a recent question discussed on out Unsolved Mysteries in Missions blog about the field of Mexico. Take a look and feel free to chime in.

Representing about 89 percent of the population, Mexican culture is overwhelmingly defined by Catholicism. While only 10 percent are regular churchgoers, most Mexicans are culturally Catholic. Catholicism is more than a religion in Mexico-it's an identity. Most holidays and celebrations have strongly Catholic overtones. There's also a strongly nationalistic flavor to Catholicism in Mexico. Mary of Guadalupe (an apparition of the Virgin Mary) was depicted on the banner for two major wars in Mexico, and her portrait evokes strong feelings of patriotism. Throughout Mexico it's common to see shrines where a variation of the Mexican national flag features Mary of Guadalupe in the center panel. Mexicans are a highly relational people-they value connectedness in society. This is often a barrier for people to become evangelical Christians. Making such a major life choice upsets everything else in their lives, as their lives center around their relationships. This is particularly true for the upper-middle and upper classes, which tend to be less willing to break social ties. The lower class is more mobile between religions and therefore tend to make up a higher percentage of evangelicals. You decide - is the dominance of the Catholic church and the connectedness of the culture the clue that will unlock this missions mystery? Or are there clues that are more convincing? Weigh in with your thoughts by posting a comment here: http://www.unsolvedministries.blogspot.com/.

So, Pray for a Missionary

I experienced the Concert of Prayer today with my fellow Administrative team. What a great joy to have WGM leaders sitting around the table praying for a field in unison. Thanks to Elson Mast for joining us from Argentina to lead us through the needs of the field. Prayer support is so important to our ministries, field, and missionary teams. God uses people here in the states to intercede on behalf of ministries all the time. So, pray for a missionary. You never know how God is at work.

Where is your mission field?
Did you have the chance to join the Concert of Prayer today? If you did you heard Jonathan Mayo pray for 25 new ministry partners to serve in Uganda, Africa. So, what do you think? Could you live and minister in Uganda? There are several ministry opportunities awaiting. You can view them on our website here or you can learn more about this field by clicking here. The majority of Ugandans are hungry for the healing love of Jesus Christ. Where is your mission field?

Small but Mighty

What a mighty God we serve! I trust you all had a wonderful day of worship. My family joined the Concert of Prayer in the parking lot after church. Thank you John Lee for leading this prayer for the new field of Nicaragua. Ubaldo and Teresa Salazar family will be leading their family to this new place of ministry in the very near future. Will you commit to pray for them? They will be experiencing many new things as they look for a house, school, and church. They are going to need several ministry partners showering them in prayer through this transition. Will you make an impact on your knees for the Salazar family?

10/4 - Ukraine

Praying for Pastors
How often do you pray for your pastor? Ernie Smith did a great job helping us to pray for the pastors he partners with in Ukraine today at the concert. He prayed for the sermons they will prepare and the messages that will be preached. He prayed for the people who will sit in the pews, benches, and chairs. Tomorrow at church could be the first time someone accepts Christ as their Savior. Let's remember the pastors, churches, and ministries in Ukraine.
Praying for our pastor is a good request for all of us to remember in our prayer times. Who needs encouragement, inspiration, and support more than pastors?
Hope to see you at the Concert tomorrow when we will pray for the new World Gospel Mission field of Nicaragua!

10/3 - Spain and Morocco

A Good Reminder...

God is in control. As World Gospel Mission looks at opening ministries in Spain and Morocco we can often get overwhelmed with all the details it takes to open a new field. Glenda Moon reminded us that if God is calling us into this area He will be faithful in providing financial and prayer supporters and He has already laid a burden on someones heart to serve in these areas. Is that someone you? You can get involved in starting this ministry now. Feel free to contact us at wgm@wgm.org today.

So what is it that you are worrying about today? Do you need to be reminded that God is in control? Let go and let God be God.

Missing

I missed the call today. I can't believe I missed the call. It's the first time since the Concert of Prayer began that I missed the call. Good thing for you and me we have the prayers on the website. It's not quite the same but it was good to be reminded about how to pray for the Stockton ministry. New volunteers, new neighborhood center, and yet there are still children desperately needing to know the love of our Saviour. Many of them have missing parents, family members, and friends because of their gang activities. Join me in praying for this ministry. Children are our future and if these neighborhood children would turn their faces to the Lord the whole Stockton, California community could be changed forever.

Come to the Concert tomorrow where we will pray for a couple of fields WGM feels God calling us to.

10/1 - Taiwan

The Concert Community
Did you make it to the Concert today? Several of you did. Were you a little confused by the reference to the Chinese community? We were praying for Taiwan, right? During the civil war two million people fled China and established a temporary government in Taiwan. 98 percent of the population in Taiwan doesn't know Jesus as their personal Savior. That's an overwhelming statistic but a prayer request to continue to remember.
Hope to see you at the Concert tomorrow where we will pray for the US based ministry of Stockton Peniel.

SOLD OUT!

Can you believe the paper tickets to the Concert of Prayer are gone? Yes, that's right we have handed out all the extra Call to Prayer magazines we had this time. That's great! We are now urging individuals to get their electronic copy via the website: www.wgm.org. The concerts have lived up to being the event of the year!

Terry Hawk led the concert of prayer this afternoon for the field of Honduras. He reminded us to pray for the leaders of the Honduran Holiness Church in their various arms of ministry, including AMSLA, the church's missionary sending agency. AMSLA currently has missionaries serving in El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Afghanistan, and other areas. That's tremendous!

The Honduran Holiness Church is bearing fruit. How is your church involved in missions? If you are interested in boosting your church's participation check out the Church Resource section of our website.

9/29 - Kazakhstan

How Big is Your God?

The country of Kazakhstan does not allow the Gospel to be shared freely. That seems a little strange to most of us living in the US where there are churches on every other street corner. Even in small towns you can find a variety of denominations and worship styles. But if Kazakhstan does not allow for the Gospel to be shared how will the people hear?

We serve a God bigger than laws, people, or barriers. Will you pray that laws will be changed and that people of all ages can hear of the life changing power of Jesus?

This is the half way mark on the Concert of Prayer challenge. Can you believe it? It has been an interesting challenge for me. I wanted to see if someone could really stop for 30 days and pray and so far so good. It is a discipline that's for sure and those of you who have made the journey with me know what I mean.

Let's finish strong! Tomorrow we will lift Honduras up in prayer.

Check One, Two

Okay, so things don't always go as planned. No matter how prepared one may be there are sometimes glitches in the system and we did have a glitch today for the Concert of Prayer. Sorry there was a little confusion when you could hear other callers, but God knows our heart and our prayers.

Sandy Anderson did a great job in leading us through praying for the World Gospel Mission ministries on the American Indian Field in Arizona. Because this ministry is located in Arizona there are unique opportunities for missionaries to serve through bi-vocational service. That means you can be employed on the reservations by tribal authority yet be involved in ministry. Current ministry needs include: medical personnel, teachers, firefighters, police, and social workers. Could God be calling you to the American Indian Field in Arizona? Where is your mission field?

9/27 - Burundi and Tanzania

The Heart of Africa

Interesting...I learned something new today. Terry Duncan shared with us at the Concert of Prayer that Burundi is a similar shape as the human heart at is located in the heart of Africa. The heart...that sounds like a good prayer reminder - the next time you see a heart you can remember this little country of Africa and can pray for its ministries in publishing and education.

Both Burundi and Tanzania are fields of World Gospel Mission, but right now there are not career missionaries serving on these fields. Would you pray that God would call His people to these areas to share the Gospel? The heart of Africa can be a reflection of God's heart with your prayer support.

Thanks for joining me today at the concert. Tomorrow we will pray for the American Indian Field. Hope you can make it!

Please continue to pray for Kenya, its ministries, and the missionaries serving there.

I have been moderating the Concerts this week and there is something really exciting about seeing God's people gather together. I find great joy in seeing the number of callers increasing. Partners for Peru

Today, David (Daudi) Strong led us in prayer for the new World Gospel Mission field of Peru. Daudi and Cathlene Strong and Ann Seaney are currently partnering with the National church to minister to the Peruvians. Daudi prayed for more ministry partners to join their team. It remind me of a phrase we use a lot at WGM, "Where is your mission field?" I know, not all of us are called to overseas missions in this capacity, but what are you doing to make an impact in your church...in your neighborhood...in your family? There is a place for each of us in missions and maybe some of you are being called to be co-workers with Daudi, Cathlene and Ann. Want to learn more about Peru? Click here. Thanks to all of you who joined us at the Concert of Prayer. There were over 40 calls today and many of you have dropped us notes saying that you are joining the Concert from a group so that means many more pray-ers. Our time has been blessed hasn't it?

Dan Searls led us in prayer today for the country of Hungary and he mentioned that only 3% of the population has called Jesus Lord. That spoke to my heart...the need is great! Could you partner with World Gospel Mission to advance the gospel in Hungary? Here are some ways to get involved.

9/23 - Japan

What Time Is It?

Do any of you know what time it is in Japan when we do our 12 noon (EDT) Concert of Prayer call? If you guessed midnight you'd be right. Kevin Zirkle kindly joined us to lead this prayer in the middle of the night.

Kevin's prayer reminded me of the POD song "Youth of a Nation". The song's crescendo has no music just a group of youth chanting "We are, we are...the youth of a nation". If only the youth in Japan could see the responsibility in their selves. The future of the church in Japan is waiting for the next generation to pick up the torch and change a country.
Won't you join me in praying for the next generation leaders in Japan?

Are you a next generation leader feeling the call to missions? Wondering what you can do now? I would recommend studying the World Go! Manual. It's an intense Bible study that will challenge you into missions activity using the Acts 1:8 model. Download it for free.

In Zambia more than 500,000 children are orphaned because of Aids. WGM is investigating ways to work with these children. Looking at those numbers I'd say there aren't enough hugs to go around, but even one makes a difference.

9/20 - PNG and 9/21 - Hispanic Ministries USA

So, if you have been following along with my blog you've noticed that it has been a couple of days since my last post. If you recall in my "In This Issue" I shared with you that the Concert of Prayer edition had challenged me personally. I don't consider myself a prayer guru and I wondered in practicality what it would take to commit to praying 30 days at the same time for my co-workers. This weekend was my first challenge... my husband and I were able to attend a married couples retreat (at the Wesleyan Campground in Fairmount) and I knew that along with not having Internet connection, I would be participating in a pre-planned schedule so attending the Concert of Prayer could get pretty tricky. I made a commitment so by golly, I was going to give it a shot. I set the alarm on my phone, set it on vibrate and put it in my pocket in hopes that I would be able to sneak away for a few moments to pray with you all.

God is good! I was able to compete with my team in our afternoon activities on Saturday not missing a single thing and then joined you all as Tim Bennett led us in prayer for Papua New Guinea. Tim reminded us of the importance of praying for our leaders. He named the leaders of the church in PNG and asked us also to pray for Jim and Becka Johnson as they oversee operations while Tim and Diane Bennett are on Homeland Ministry Assignment.

On Sunday, things were a bit more complicated. Our morning lecture was going long, but I was enjoying myself so much I had not noticed. Suddenly sirens began going off...now, I grew up in Fairmount so I knew exactly what that meant it was 12 noon. I checked my phone and some how a button had got pushed and my reminder had not gone off. The siren was just what I needed to excuse myself and join you all in praying for Hispanic Ministries in the USA. Tim Hawk did a great job leading us in prayer for this very new field. It will be exciting to see what God has in store for this new ministry team.

Life gets complicated, but prayer is always worth making time for. Hope to see you at the Concert tomorrow as we pray for Zambia.

NEW EXPERIENCE

This was the first time I attended the concert outside the office. I set the alarm on my phone so I would not miss it. I joined you, my fellow concert goers, to pray for El Salvador with my two year-old son, Noah. Noah and I were out and about today so we listened to the phone call in a public restaurant. It was an interesting experience to see him at his first Concert. : ) David Hawk led us in prayer and gave us several requests that we should remember in ongoing prayer. Noah ate his lunch and would look to me for approval every now and then. I am not sure what Noah learned from the Concert of Prayer, but it will be one of those moments etched in my mind's eye for future reference.

So, have you invited relatives or little people to the concert? It was a new experience, but a fun one that I would recommend.

9/18 - Uruguay

NEW Possibilities

Modern technology rocks! I mean who could have imagined that every single Call to Prayer reader could gather together to pray over the telephone if they wanted? What a wonderful world we live in!

I know some of you are thinking that this is not what you would describe as exciting but maybe a bit more...scary. I know, new things can certainly be scary. I'll be the first to tell you that when I enter a room with complete strangers I am not going to be the first to reach out my hand and introduce myself. I'm a comfortable wallflower. : ) So big props (accolades) to you callers who have been a little frightened; we are thankful you were willing to try something outside your comfort zone. It was for good reason!

I think those opening a new field, like Uruguay, probably feel the same as we do making the conference call, but probably on a larger scale. It's really scary to go not knowing the culture, language, not having a house, or job and willingly say this is where God has called me - I will go. It's a good prayer reminder. The next time you pick up the phone say a prayer for the future team God will lead into Uruguay. There is no better way to cure a scare then knowing the peace of God.

Be blessed!

9/17 - Sudan

TEAMWORK

Since the beginning of the Concert on Monday, the Ideas in Motion department has gathered together in my office to make the call - as a team. That has got me to thinking... in an event like this, T E A M is the name of the game. If you have been making the calls and praying with other readers you are part of the prayer team. If you have been leading a small group through the prayer requests you are part of the prayer team. If you have been gathering your neighbors and friends around a phone somewhere (like the Ideas in Motion department) you too, are ALL teammates.

It takes a team to do missions. It takes go-ers, senders, pray-ers, and givers. There is a place for everyone on the team. Thank you for supporting this new field of Sudan today through your prayer support. Sudan's missionaries are few (Joy Phillips), the need is great, and yet today its teammates grew. Continue to pray for Sudan, for Joy as she serves in Church Ministries and don't forget to ask Him what kind of teammate He wants you to be.

9/16 - Concert of Prayer - Bolivia

I don't think it was an accident. Do you?
I think God has a plan for everything and I think Bolivia needed our prayers today. Bolivia continues to have political unrest and I do pray that our leadership is granted wisdom and discernment as they continue to minister in this country. Rick Lampen led us in prayer for the country he has served in for several years. Thanks, Rick for the reminder to pray for the leaders in the National church. The future of Bolivia depends on their earnest seeking of God's will.

September 15 - Haiti

Hope you were able to join me on the Concert of Prayer phone call today. Paul Shingledecker led the group as we prayed for the field of Haiti. What a timely request as many are suffering in Haiti today with the loss of their homes and possessions due to the recent hurricane activity. Paul reminded us in his prayer that those offering crisis relief are having a hard time getting supplies to the people. That's a request to continue praying for. World Gospel Mission will be be asking for your partnership in the crisis relief efforts later this month.

There were a couple of glitches in the system. We were able to hear more than what we expected, but we hope to have fixed for tomorrow. It is our hope that you will only be able to hear the missionary representative leading the prayer.

Tomorrow we pray for Bolivia. Another timely request I'd say. Hope you make it to the concert tomorrow.

We will be gathering for prayer on behalf of Haiti in just a couple of hours. Our brothers and sisters in Haiti could certainly use our prayers as their land has been devastated by the recent hurricanes.

Just in case you need the phone information again...

YOU’RE INVITED! Join other readers for a five-minute prayer for the 30-day challenge. Prayer will begin every day at 12 noon (EDT). Call 800-868-1838 (domestic) or 404-920-6368 (international). Use code 247679#.

See you at the concert!

For those of you who can't get enough of Face Book I wanted to let you know I have set up a new group called Call to Prayer Readers. Join if you like. I'll give the prayer requests daily during the Concert of Prayer. In the future it will be a place to toss out ideas, discuss articles, and collaborate together.

Got your ticket?

It's Here!

My ticket to the Concert of Prayer arrived at my house last week. Yep, I'm talking about the magazine - Call to Prayer. Have you got yours yet?

From what I hear you guys are really excited about this issue and I am so glad because I think God is going to do big things for the Kingdom as we unite together in prayer.

A prayer request for those of you who are "waiting in line" for the concert - on August 27 there will be a group of WGM staff testing out the phone system. We want to make sure all the "could-be bugs" are worked out of the system before we begin the concert on September 15. We are purposely gathering to pray for the 30 day challenge. We know that Satan will likely not be too happy that so many believers are gathering together in prayer and I would ask you to join us. Will you partner with us in prayer?

Wanted: more groupies.
Know someone else you would like to invite to the concert? Please send them this link for a free subscription and we'll rush their ticket (Call to Prayer) out to them immediately.

Are you going to the concert?

What? You don't know anything about the concert?
You don't have your tickets yet?

No problem. I can help. No need to camp out at the ticket counter all night I know the easy way to get all access passes to the World Gospel Mission concert event of the year. The concert begins September 15. And the key to getting in is in the next Call to Prayer. August 10 (or around there) is just a few days away and that's when you should be receiving your next issue of the magazine. The entire edition focuses on an invitation to prayer - a concert of prayer. For 30 days we are asking you, our beloved readers, to pray for WGM fields of service both current and those we feel God might be moving us into. Would you partner with us? Every day at noon (Eastern) we'll pick up the phone to dial a 1-800 where a missionary representing that field will lead us in prayer. It could possibly be the biggest prayer meeting in WGM's history. Are you up for the challenge? So, let me ask you again - are you going to the concert?

See you there!

The PTA for Ordinary People

I don’t know about you but I consider myself pretty ordinary. Sure, there are things I like to do that I consider myself “good at”, but I know those things come from God. Those are the skills, gifts and talents that He gave me to make me uniquely – Kristi.

God has given us all the stamp of uniqueness and He can and will use each one of us. That’s why I like this idea of the WGMU PTA (page 20 July/August 2007) so much. The whole plan is mapped out for you in the Great Co-Mission catalog. World Gospel Mission provides the missionaries, the fundraising tools, and the coaching and you provide the people, the resources, and the drive to make it happen. Truly anyone can do it and it is rewarding to be mission active.

I am the Director of Ideas in Motion. We are the communications, media, and publishing crew for WGM. We decided to take on a Great Co-Mission catalog project as a team. We picked a project, set a goal, set up a web page, began sharing our project with those we know and Jesus began to bless our efforts. In record time we had raised enough money to bless 9 kids in Kazakhstan with warm clothes and coats for the winter. It was really easy – the hardest part was just saying, “Yes, I can do that.” I am sure glad I said yes and I am sure you will be too.

Any other “ordinary” people out there willing to share about their Great Co-Mission catalog experience? Click on the comments link below and tell us about it.
